These stamps are often mis-described with the brown on yellow paper (44a) being sold as the higher value stamp. The brown on pale buff (44) was printed in 1892 whereas the yellow paper variety comes from the 1899 printing and was never circulated. Good gum on both examples. Hinge remnants.$45.00

Forged overprints appeared on the market soon after this stamp was circulated. Genuine examples have a 27mm overprint, forgeries measure 29mm. Sanabria states 150 inverted examples exist, SOCORICO quotes 200. Either way, scarce in genuine form.
